As a crew for 2 years, I've learn about the efficiency of working at a fast-food restaurant. However, to me it had a misunderstanding job scope. It is not as easy as we thought. We still need to think and give good services, watch our food quality before presenting the food the customers and the cleanliness.

Not just a floor crew, I learn how to multi-task while working at the delivery section where I have to prepare and key in food orders for 3 different platforms. Not just that, I did tried to work as an assistant in the kitchen, by helping the cook to display food to the plates. It is challenging as I need to be fast and in one period, it can be overwhelming. I also do the small mise-en-place such as grating gingers, preparing coleslaw, sauces and cutting vegetables. I also helped my manager in stock taking sometimes.

Soup Restaurant

I was there as a floor crew for my internship during my Nitec years. As this was my first work place that I care for making an impression and expanding my knowledge, I was in a very huge responsibility and expectation for myself to do well. For every internship program, there will always be a mentor and mentee and I'm the mentee that strives to be the best mentee that my mentor have ever teached to someone. She was a employee for the company for more than 7 years, so I was always trying to make a good impression for her to notice me that I am the better one.

During the time of stressing and making myself busy, I did meet a lot of different people. I have this auntie working for Soup Restaurant for more than 10 years and she would always teaches me things whenever I made mistakes. Other colleagues also look out for me and in the end, I realized that having fun and just experience it was more than enough. This uncle that work part-time for extra money told me that he used to work in restaurants that are under hotel corporation and told me tips to better. All these kinds of small experiences and tips are brought forward into my present life.

No matter what I identity I was when I'm working in Soup Restaurant, there will always be countless mistakes but it will be countless learning lesson for me. Whcih I am grateful for what Soup Restaurant has teaches me.

Ginett

Honestly speaking, Ginett had opened my eyes. I felt that once I stepped into Ginett, the work place just sucked my life soul, in a good way, and made me enjoy working there. There are some ups and down and crying due to stress and misunderstanding between my colleague, but it is quickly solved.

Every team in any work place have bad situation but ours, we know that having a team in a restaurant is a very important thing, and that makes the services to be smooth is due to good teamwork and communication. They are the reasons why I love Ginett, the people are selfless and would always willing to teach me and correct me whenever I am wrong or whenever I ask questions. They teaches me that work is work and friendships are friendship, no matter what happened between to the friendships, good or bad, we shouldn't use that as an excuse and jeopardize the whole services. I learn a lot too, about wines and services and tricks to even talk to guests or make small conversation or jokes to make them feel comfortable.

buds by SLS

Before starting this internship, I was already dreading and was not excited for my 3rd internship. However, after meeting and working with such an amazing group of people, I was glad and relieved that my 3rd internship workplace is at buds.

I was from the food and beverage industry, you could see that from my past work experiences, but I decided to try something new as I want to widen my knowledge and experience. Therefore, I decided to join an event related company.

The reason I was glad that I joined buds is because it's related to my past skills which is services, and I can bring it forward to my new job. This also allows me to understand the different events activity that they offer, and it was not overwhelming at all.

This team has taught me a lot of values and skills such as being a team player and having good communication between each colleague is important, the patience and the adaptability of being outside of my comfort zone. Lastly, whenever I have made a mistake, the response from my seniors is to never blame for a mistake, instead, take it as a lesson.

School Experiences

When I was young, at the age of 13 to 16, I was not working and just either will be studying or playing my phones or with my friends. But I remember, the very first time that my teachers asked me if I want to volunteer in helping them with community works, especially in arts, I was swoon over and agreed with them.

However, after secondary school, when I started my Nitec years, I regretted in not joining any CCA or participating in any community services due to work and slight family circumstances. Following years, I did not participate in any CCA that I can commit in long term due to my studies.

Home Visit to Old Folk Home

It's a class event for our last year in Secondary School. We all planned a series of activities to visit the elderly. To do something that won't be active tiring and activities that they might have fun together. So we have some karaoke session with a guitar and Chinese, Hokkien and Malay songs.

Speech Day 2018

It's my last speech day for my secondary school that I going to attend and I felt that I should just have fun for the last time. So I volunteered myself to help my art teachers in making the art exhibition happen. I get to help my teachers in their artworks with their guidance of course, in the mean time, I could learn new techniques that I wouldn't try for my Final Year Coursework, such as "Scraping Pain Technique".

It was a memorable memory that I know it's going to be a last art project that I'm going to have fun in before the exams starts and my journey continues to ITE.

Nee Soon East National Day Carnival 2017 Art Jamming

When my teacher asked me if I want to volunteer and join this event, in my mind was thinking: "Why not, I stayed so near, might as well have fun since I'm free." I'm grateful that I say yes as it was so fun and there are activities to play with even though I one of the volunteer to work.

Co-Curriculum Activities

Scrabble

Scrabble was my CCA when I was at primary school. It was fun to learn and experience the game. I'm glad I did because if not, I wouldn't get to know it was very fun even though it looks like it's boring.

Wallpaper 63.jpg

Choir

Conclusion was, I love singing. I would listen to music and sing to my hearts out whenever I'm in the shower. I would just jam with the music and have an alone party and then, in a blink of the eye, it's already 1 hour.

I thought it will be easy since it's just "singing" but nooooo, I am WRONG! It's not that bad but it's not that easy too. At least I enjoyed the process and I get to understand that I'm an Alto, which are more deeper voice compared to soprano.

Wallpaper 28.jpg

ART Club

I joined art club during my last 2 years in secondary school due to the merge of both Northview and Northland Secondary School. Due to the lack of member, choir have to stopped it's activity. I was given another chance to try a new CCA and I was thinking "I'm an art student, studying art, doing art coursework, so why not just go to art club as I can focus on my art coursework too."

However, instead of putting majority of my time doing my coursework during CCA period, instead, I was helping my teachers to facilitate and guide my juniors in their activity while also helping my teachers in the school events too.

Karate

I joined karate for the reason for my friend, she was scared so we accompany her. I didn't want to join for too long as I don't intend to join Karate in the first place. But it was fun actually. During lesson, we practice the techniques for the 1 reason which is protecting ourselves from any danger, we were promised to not use it for any harm accidentally or intentionally, only for self defense.

I am grateful for meeting my karate sensei (teacher) as he will understand each of us one by one, not by group. So, he will be calling me as Celest instead of my friend's friend. Even I stopped going to the club, he understand instead of pressuring me of joining back and he even keep in contact with us recently, even though it's been 3 to 4 years after skipping his classes. The last time I met him was during Chinese New Year 2023. He's so nice and kind to open his house and welcome us back and tell us all sort of story while brewing Chinese tea for us.

Chosen Trip of 2017

Overseas Value-In-Action Programme Service Learning to Orphanages in Riau, Indonesia

It's a class trip that our principals wanted us to learn and experience a way to give back to the community that doesn't have to chance to have anything and everything they want and need.

Therefore, our main purpose to go to Riau is to build and decorate their orphanage, such as repaint their doors, walls, cleaning up the paints on the window, building walls from the scratch by using bricks and cement and more.

However, this was not all we do for the trip, we also go to a school and play with the students. We get to interact with them through games and they perform for all of us. It was a traditional dance performance and I was amazed.

We get to visit their mosque and listen to one of guy talking about the religion of the Muslim. It was interesting as I learn about the many wonders of the religions.

One thing about the trip that I really cannot forget was not about the building and renovating of the house, not about the school that we have visited, not about the mosque but is the reflection time that we need to do every night. The day was tiring enough and energy draining, and we still need to do reflection.

It's not a normal reflection but we need to write everything of what we see, hear, feel, thinks, and action. It could take to 30 to 45 minutes for everyone to finish writing and call it day. I remember right after that, when we went back to our rooms, right after bathing, I was knocked out from the bed and just fell asleep immediately.

If I have a choice to choose to go or not, I will say yes to the trip. This trip actually made our class to be more bonded than before, and I am glad that we get to have a chance to go and have fun while making a difference for other people life.

Overseas Community Services Trip to Semarang, Indonesia

I did not ask for this trip actually, I was asked to join by one of the teachers that joined us for the Riau trip. But I am glad that they asked me and I said yes.

We get to meet students from the school at Semarang, we performed for them with a few different types of dances, such as Chinese dance, Malay dance, Indian dance and Western Hip Hop dance; and I lead the Chinese dance by teaching them the proper way of holding the ribbon, and I will try to create the dance from various inspiration on Youtube.

We played some games that the Semarang's students have planned for us. And we get to bond together through games and performances. I still keep in contact with one of the students on Instagram, and she recently graduated from university with a flying colors.

We went to "The Great Mosque of Central Java" also known as "Al-Masjid Al-Nabawi in Madinah, located at Gayamsari. It is the largest and most important mosque in the province, with the capacity of 16,000 worshippers.
It also have this big area at the entrance of the mosque that have 6 big umbrellas that can be open. One word to describe the mosque, "majestic".

"Blenduk Church" is also one of the attraction that we went, it is also known as "The Protestant Church in Western Indonesia Immanuel Semarang", located at Jalan Letjen Suprapto No.32. One interesting about the church that I still remember was that, it is built in the era of Dutch Government in Semarang, hence the reason of the roof for the church is round, like a dome.

"Sam Pong Kong", also known as "Gedung Batu Temple" or "The Stone Building". It's the oldest Chinese temple and the red tiles roof are one of their specialty about them.

We went to these places before we went to the school, I remember every night, we will have reflection to write and dance to practice.

The most interesting part are not just that, it's about how I fell sick and got high fever due to spread of disease in the air, or at least that was what I was told. I went to the hospital with 2 other people and I remember that I was having fun too in the hospital. Maybe because of the medicine that we got a rush of adrenaline, suddenly, we just got tired and fell asleep. Once we woke up, we were told by our teacher that we we so noisy and then just silence suddenly. After that, we went back to the hotel once we are feeling better and got our medicine, and we were told that the remaining of the students were all sad that we didn't get to be with them when they visit other attractions of Semarang.

It might be surprising but my favorite part of the trip, are not just the attractions, or meeting them but is just a simple way of having fun in the hospital while being sick in the mean time.
